Secrets and Whispers
The best sale the advertising industry ever made, was convincing their clients that the only way to get more customers was to shout louder. It’s actually the opposite — Everyone listens with more interest when they hear someone whispering.
Try this out the next time you’re in a coffee shop with a friend. Speak at your normal voice level and then lean in and whisper something to them. I’ll bet you five bucks that if you’re quick you will catch someone sitting near you tilting their head in your direction in an attempt to catch what you were trying to keep secret.
In a world where people trying to out shout each other and every attempt is being made to increase their individual volume, we’ve all gotten a lot better at blocking out the cacophony, but when you whisper — it catches attention. Everyone wants to know what you’re whispering about.
- Whispers are personal and private
- Whispers delivered from one individual to another
- Whispers arouse curiosity and everyone wonders what you’re whispering about
Whispers promise secrets and secrets are sexy.
Shouting isn’t.
Shhhh…
